Even though most people complain about their lot in life, they do not experience enough discomfort to motivate them towards serious change. So they drift through life, swapping their complaints about the ‘rat race’ with each other whilst doing the same things over and over again in order to keep themselves immersed in the ‘rat race’. If, for any reason, people are pushed to the edge of their comfort zone, feelings of discomfort well deep from within. The closer they get to the edge the more outside their known world they are; the more turbulence they experience, the more confusion enters their being and the more their assumptive world destabilises.
For most people the loss of certainty and the state of confusion is an unpleasant experience because there is no familiarity to guide them. The more confusion there is, the more people suffer a loss of emotional, psychological, cultural and physical landmarks.
While some will rise to such challenges the majority will not, and so they seek a retreat towards their known. It is a retreat towards security, comfort and certainty.
